The 1102 Apartments

The 1943 conversion made 24 apartments of the lodge floors, and by the 1946–47 city directory the building was listed as the “1102 Apartments,” its tenants recorded name by name: war workers and their families, most of whom left almost no other trace in the historical record. The directory page is their monument.

A tenant taught conversational Spanish from Apartment 15 on Monday and Thursday evenings. Another sold a 1938 Chevrolet from Apartment 2. Ordinary life, door by door, in a building built for ceremonies.
